When we talk about methods of closing the bottle, discussions arise among producers - and increasingly among consumers as well.
On the one hand, we have those faithful to cork, an ecological and recyclable material that immediately evokes the ritual of uncorking, creates high expectations in wine lovers and has an undeniable ability to modulate the refinement of wine.
On the opposite front is the "screw cap party", which has more and more followers; after all, it is a functional, economical closure that makes the wine immediately usable.
In the company we found ourselves at a crossroads: on the one hand, the need to support the aging capacity of our wines - in particular the Lugana - by using cork; on the other, the desire to make life easier for those who choose formats intended for more immediate drinking, such as the half bottle.
This "small size", which we produce only for Montunal, is particularly requested by the hotel world and is therefore penalized by traditional corking.
Considering this criticality, and the lesser suitability for the long refinement of the "mezzina", we solved the problem by choosing the screw cap for the 0.375 liters of Lugana Montunal from the 2023 harvest.
On the other hand, we wanted even more performing corks for all the other wines: single-piece (not agglomerated, which contains unappealing glues) and checked one by one with the new Swiss technology Vocus Cork Analyzer, which allows you to identify even minimal presences of the infamous TCA molecule, responsible for the cork smell .
The cork comes from sustainable forests of quercus suber from Sardinian and Portugal, at least nine years old: it is therefore a perfectly mature raw material. What it takes to give an excellent service to our wines and your tastings.
